butter chicken recipe

This butter chicken recipe delivers tender chicken in a rich, creamy tomato sauce infused with warm Indian spices. The combination of butter, cream, tomato, garlic, ginger, and aromatic spices creates the comforting balance of savory, tangy, and gently sweet flavors that makes this Indian classic so irresistible.

Building the Flavor

The secret to a memorable butter chicken lies in building layers of flavor rather than relying on heat alone. Marinating the chicken helps develop tenderness and seasoning, while browning adds a deeper savory character. Meanwhile, the tomato base provides acidity that balances the richness of butter and cream.

Creating the Creamy Tomato Sauce

For the sauce, gently cooking the aromatics and spices allows their flavors to bloom before the tomatoes and other ingredients join the pan. Once the sauce develops its depth, blend or strain it for a smoother restaurant-style texture.

Finishing the Curry

Finally, return the chicken to the sauce and allow everything to simmer together so the flavors can come into balance. This is where you make any adjustments, add extra Kasuri methi for extra flavor or a touch more salt if needed.

What to Serve with It

Serve this comforting curry with basmati rice, naan, or another Indian flatbread. A spoonful of yogurt, fresh cilantro, or a squeeze of lime can also provide a refreshing contrast to the rich sauce. Because the flavors become even more harmonious as they rest, butter chicken makes an excellent choice for entertaining or preparing ahead.

Why This Butter Chicken Recipe Works

This butter chicken recipe is all about balance. The chicken brings savory depth, while the tomato base contributes just enough acidity to keep the sauce from becoming too rich. Butter and cream then round everything out, creating the silky texture that makes this curry so satisfying.

The spices should add warmth and complexity rather than overwhelm the dish. Garlic, ginger, and aromatic Indian spices build the foundation, while a gentle simmer allows the flavors to come together. For the best texture, let the sauce develop before returning the chicken to the pan.

Serving Butter Chicken

Serve the curry with fragrant basmati rice or warm naan so you can soak up every bit of the sauce. Fresh cilantro adds brightness, while a squeeze of lime can provide a welcome contrast to the creamy richness. Additionally, this dish makes an excellent centerpiece for a relaxed dinner with family or friends.

For a larger Indian-inspired meal, pair it with other flavorful dishes and fresh sides. The creamy sauce also makes butter chicken especially appealing to cooks who want restaurant-style comfort food without complicated techniques.
